The Queensland Independent is a community newspaper produced by staff and students of the School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Queensland.
TQI is distributed free each month to suburbs adjoining the university's St Lucia campus, Brisbane, and is also sold at newsagencies thoughout Queensland, and by subscription. Established as The Weekend Independent in 1992, and the first Australian newspaper to be published on the Internet (in May 1993), it was renamed The Queensland Independent in 1998.
The newspaper has earned widespread respect for the quality of its journalism and has broken a succession of major stories which have been followed up by mainstream commercial media. Former editor Bruce Grundy won the Queensland Whistleblowers Award in 1997 for investigative journalism, and Rachael Edginton won the Media Alliance's 1997 award for best student journalism. |
